InfoTimor has a vision to create ICT skills, training and employment in Timor Leste.’

Our mission is to assist in the rebuilding of Timor Leste using information communication technology to deliver skills development, education and employment through the creation of a sustainable not-for-profit social enterprise.  Info Timor is supported by the xpand Foundation in Australia.

Info Timor is the first not-for-profit enterprise in Timor Leste focusing on capacity building and using information technology as the primary tool to create positive social change.

Info Timor was established in 2008 providing the first computer training centre and computer remanufacturing workshop in Timor Leste.

Background

The Info Timor mission is to assist in the rebuilding of Timor Leste using information communication technology to deliver skills development, education and employment through the creation of a sustainable social enterprise.

Info Timor is staffed and managed by Timorese who have the skills required to build and manage the Info Timor enterprise.

Info Timor employs and trains young Timorese people to implement and support ICT use across Timor Leste.  These positions include technicians; training staff; support staff and; administration staff.

The plan is to establish a Technology Resource Centre in each District and will skill people to be employed as qualified technicians, certified trainers and administration staff.  There are currently two Technology Resource Centres established in the Districts of Baucau and Suai and they employ over ten paid staff and a number of volunteers who are learning through on the job training.

It is anticipated that ICT support will also be provided to Government offices, NGOs and community groups. Through this model, a whole-of-community approach will be achieved.

The Technology Resource Centres will also provide community internet access points and be the hubs for ‘open learning centres. This will give members of the community the ability to undertake both formal and informal online learning using the internet.

The enterprise has the following four strategic objectives.

  •  To seed and develop a new self-sustaining social enterprise that will train and employ Timor Leste citizens who will contribute to their country’s future through information communication technology.
  •  To provide fee-for-service IT support services to local communities and supply quality refurbished computers to schools, local NGOs, District and Sub District Administration including at the Suco level and disadvantaged individuals.
  • To train and employ young people in computer and related IT businesses.
  • To generate income to make the enterprise sustainable providing employment and training opportunities and to invest back into the enterprise, both in it’s staff and infrastructure, to support its growth.

Info Timor’s achievements have been recognised internationally through becoming a finalist in the Stockholm Challenge Award 2008.
